Philippine 110th Independence Day
The Philippines celebrated its 110th Independence Day last June 12, 2008 and the Theme: was “Tribute to Filipino Excellence: Likas na Karunugan , Kakayahan at Kahusayan” The celebration of Independence day would be a great inspiration to the youth who hopefully would emulate the heroes of the revolution against Spain in their acts of sublime heroism and martyrdom. These acts compared favorably with those of the heroes of other nations.
The Philippines declared its independence on June 12, 1898 when the Spaniards were defeated in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American war. General Emilio Aguinaldo, who later on would become the first president of the Philippines, proclaimed the sovereignty of the country in his ancestral home in Kawit, Cavite. The event also presented the unfolding of the Philippine flag, and the playing of the national anthem which was entitled Marcha Filipina Magdalo (now known as Lupang Hinirang meaning Chosen Land). The Philippines was under Spanish rule for 333 years (1565-1898).
Here in MAPAC, we also joined in commemoration of the Philippine Independence Day. The Filipino brothers helped each other to have a meaningful event. We started this with a mass and followed by a small cultural presentation by Filipino Marist Brothers and Passionist Sisters. The PowerPoint presentation gave us the glimpses about the Philippine history and culture. Then they served Filipino delicacies and food during dinner time.
